Abstract
Mining activities can have significant environmental and ecological impacts. Considering the remote nature of mining operations, they are often monitored using satellites technology. Satellites technology can assist in collecting critical information related to the environmental impacts of the tailings and mine waste disposal, such as the extent of land disturbance and the concentration of pollutants in water bodies. This information can help mining companies in minimizing environmental footprint and complying with environmental regulations.
Overall, there are many advantages of using satellite technology in the mine waste management. The satellite technology can help mining companies to optimize their operations, reduce waste, and improve safety. This paper is to discuss a range of currently available satellite-based services which can provide regular updates on land-use changes, tailings deposition, mine waste rock footprint, water levels, and other environmental indicators related to mine waste management. A case studies where satellite technology is applied will be presented.
