Abstract
Electrification of a full fleet of production and support vehicles encompasses a wide range of equipment types, duty cycles, utilization rates and operational requirements. Meaning electrifying a mining operation requires an overview of a diverse set of technologies and their maturity levels. This becomes a challenge when many of the technologies enabling electrification are maturing at different rates. From megawatt charging systems, to charging management solutions, the landscape of industrial electrification technology is evolving rapidly.
In this study, a map of the current technology landscape for electrification is presented. The major regional and global players are identified in key technology categories including cells, packs, chargers, power electronics, digital solutions and BEVs. The map also identifies emerging technologies and companies that are supporting decarbonization in mining. The landscape map helps provide an overview of the electric vehicle supply chain for mining and identifies areas of growth and competition.
In addition to the technology landscape, the roles of each of the major actors in the adoption of BEVs are identified, from OEMs to end-users to standards bodies. An analysis of each stakeholder group identifies the areas of ongoing innovation and the bottlenecks holding back electrification in the mining sector.
Finally, this study also addresses the key drivers of innovation in the electric vehicle supply chain, to assess the effects of components that are on a long-term trajectory of cost reduction. This assessment looks at the growth rate of BEV sales in mining equipment worldwide to gauge the potential for future cost reductions for industrial BEV technology.
