Abstract
Water stewardship and sustainability are recognized as key pillars in a successful mine operation. Water plays a critical role in mining operations from right to operate considerations and incoming environmental water quality to operational water needs and tailings management.
As mines continue to evolve their understanding of water management, digital transformation of mining water ecosystems has become recognized as an important catalyst in successful water management throughout the mining operation. However, there are significant challenges to measuring and managing water successfully, particularly in remote areas. It will be imperative for the mining industry to fully integrate and operationalize data to optimize water processes.
As companies rise to meet these challenges, they have the potential to significantly improve their mining operations while simultaneously addressing water stewardship.
Evolving technologies and partnerships will be key in the holistic approach companies need to take to address the water stewardship challenges facing the mining industry. In this session, we will discuss these challenges and the positive impact of enhanced sensing technologies and platforms combined with data integration with mining management systems, and how the digital transformation process in the mining water ecosystem is not as daunting as it may seem.
Advances in remote monitoring platforms have made it possible to bring data from the most remote environments to a cloud-based system. Leveraging these remote terminal units, sensing accuracy is maintained with reduced requirements for site visits, allowing for early warning of key risks.
As technology advances, it is important to understand how it can be applied and interact with existing systems in the operation to increase efficiency and reliability, requiring seamless integration with mining operations management systems. The combination of these integrated platforms helps mines realize the full data value, extracting valuable insights making it possible to not only make informed decisions, but to optimize processes utilizing digital tools such as model predictive control, artificial intelligence, or machine learning.
