Abstract
The use of pumpable polyester resin has become an increasingly popular choice for ground support in underground hard rock mining. Its ability to effectively reinforce and stabilize the surrounding rock mass with reduced quality control issues has turned it into a preferred product for rapid development in difficult ground and collapsing drill holes. One of the key advantages of pumpable polyester resin is its versatility. When used in a variety of ground conditions, including fractured rock, corrosive conditions, and high-stress environments, polyester resin injection is an ideal solution for many mining applications.
Originally devised for mechanized bolters employing hollow bar technology, the evolution of pumpable polyester resin has witnessed notable advancements in resin formulation, application equipment, and installation techniques. Presently, its modern application addresses inefficiencies in ground support processes, contributing significantly to enhanced mining operations.
Ongoing developments in modern pumpable polyester resin systems focus on bolstering efficiency, designing applicable ground supports, mitigating risks, minimizing unplanned rehabilitation, enhancing quality control measures, reducing manual operator involvement, and integrating automated equipment and controls. This concerted effort ensures a more consistent application, thereby elevating safety standards and boosting productivity by relocating operators away from the High Risk Zone.
This paper aims to explore the purpose behind utilizing polyester resin, recent developments, advancements in quality control, and the efficiencies achieved through the integration of modern polyester resin systems onto rebar bolters, cable bolters, and jumbo drills within the mining process.
