Abstract
The mining industry is currently grappling with significant challenges, including declining ore grades, increasing difficulty in reaching deposits, and environmental concerns. These challenges are further compounded by the global trend of urbanization, which has led to a shortage of skilled labour in the mining sector. To address these issues, the industry has turned to larger equipment and automation technologies. However, these solutions have their own limitations and do not fully address the industry's needs.
Wenco’s Martin Politick, Director of Systems Engineering and Architecture will present a new approach to these challenges: Open Autonomy. This concept involves the establishment of a recognized standard API (ISO-23725) that serves as a bridge between the Fleet Management System (FMS) and the autonomy provider. This approach opens up new opportunities for companies that were previously not involved in the mining sector to enter the market. It also allows for the automation of mixed fleets, enhancing efficiency and productivity.
The challenges posed by the current closed-stack solutions offered by major Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) will be discussed. These solutions require mining operations to commit to their entire technology stack, limiting flexibility and decision-making. The paper proposes Open Autonomy as a solution to this problem, allowing for greater flexibility and choice.
The potential of Open Autonomy to address the environmental impact of mining operations will also be explored, discussing the industry's move towards electrification as a key strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The paper highlights the potential of smaller battery-electric haul trucks and the benefits of swarm mining, where deploying numerous smaller autonomous trucks may prove more efficient than traditional large mining trucks.
In conclusion, this paper will make the case that Open Autonomy can revolutionize the mining industry by intensifying competition, expanding opportunities, and enhancing adaptability. It can help address the challenges facing the industry, including declining material quality, deposits that are more difficult to access, environmental impact, and difficulty in expanding resource development. The paper emphasizes Wenco's commitment to advancing standardization within the mining industry and its ongoing initiatives in this area.
