Abstract
The integration of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) satellites promises to reshape traditional mining practices, representing a pivotal response to the current need for responsible mining. Our presentation will highlight the instrumental role of Pixxel’s HSI satellites in navigating the dynamic landscape of mineral estimation, exploration, and optimising mine operations.
By capturing high spectral fidelity imagery, HSI provides unparalleled insights into the impact of mining activities. HSI satellites present an innovative solution to tailings dams, particularly in remediation through advanced vegetative studies. We will showcase how this near-real-time, data-driven approach empowers decision-makers to formulate informed and sustainable strategies for tailings dam restoration, marking a crucial step towards environmentally conscious mining practices.
Delving into mineral exploration, we spotlight the success of Pixxel’s HSI satellites that operate within the visible and near-infrared (VNIR) spectrum. Although in the early stages of our analysis, we’ve already achieved positive identifications over Cuprite, marking a stride in identifying minerals like hematite. However, more notable is the capability to monitor iron minerals and rare earth metals precisely. Our exhibits will serve as tangible examples, demonstrating HSI's cost-effective and efficient solutions for identifying and characterising mineral deposits and illustrating its potential to redefine exploration methodologies.
HSI is not a newcomer to mineral exploration, with several airborne applications already in place. Our presentation acknowledges this and instead, highlights the unique advantages of HSI satellites, positioning them as valuable alternatives or complements to existing techniques. Our presentation illustrates how organisations can leverage HSI satellites for initial observations over vast landscapes, gaining an advantageous overview of hotspot areas for exploration. This capability, paired with the fast-tasking nature, positions hyperspectral imagery as a valuable complementary tool to other sensors.
The focus is on the competitive edge of satellites, particularly the scale and frequency of datasets they offer. This becomes vital in remediation efforts for abandoned mine lands, where the demand for frequent data surpasses the practicality of traditional airborne methods. Additionally, Pixxel’s HSI solutions cover multiple use cases in a single image, without constant adjustments or pre-defined requirements. Furthermore, the presentation delves into the operational benefits of employing HSI satellites, streamlining cross-border exploration efforts, and simplifying bureaucratic processes, particularly in sensitive regions
By focusing on tangible applications, we will showcase the undeniable advantages that HSI brings to the forefront of the mining industry. Additionally, we’ll unravel the full potential of Pixxel’s HSI satellites, paving the way for a more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally conscious future for mining practices.
