Abstract
In the context of global warming, it’s becoming critical for the mining industry to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels and decarbonize its value stream. Giving its operation reality, every mine will have to establish its own objectives and plan based on the available technologies, its capacity to integrate them and the financial viability of the required improvements. To add in terms of complexity, the spectrum of decarbonization solutions is very large and continuously evolving. This means that the mining industry must adapt and be agile regarding the evaluation and integration of all these technologies. Today’s technologies like energy management system driven by AI or emission monitoring driven by IoT can be leveraged to optimize energy usage and integrate emission reduction into operation philosophy. When it comes to planning for sustainability, instead of building a rigid plan, the approach could be to build a flexible digital twin of your decarbonization plan and use this model to rapidly compare scenarios. This comparation involves financial KPIS as well as GHG reduction efficiency. In the first stage, the model is purely theoretical, but as we get into more details, operational data can be fed to the model, and it can then be used to validate the benefits of a GHG reduction initiative or project on the operation baseline.
