Abstract
Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) is a widely adopted sustainability standard originated by the Mining Association of Canada in 2004 and now adopted by National mining associations in 13 countries. TSM is available publicly to encourage its use as a best practice reference, and The TSM Responsible Sourcing Supplement supports operators by identifying the alignment between TSM and additional standards such as The Copper Mark and Responsible Gold.
Within the 9 Protocols comprising TSM, the recently updated Safe, Healthy and Respectful Workplaces Protocol includes criteria related to Critical Controls Management and workplace culture. TSM protocols evolve over time and the concept of critical controls management was incorporated into the standard in 2020, and in 2023 criteria and a new indicator were added for psychological safety.
The best practice guidance that is embodied in TSM helps operators draw on rigorous systems approach to risk management as well as the broader context of safety culture (as supported by demonstrated commitment to psychological safety). This fireside chat is an opportunity for conference attendees to engage with senior operations and safety managers in a discussion on how they are drawing on these features of TSM to improve fatal risk management in their workplaces.
This session is intended to provide idea sharing for those already implementing TSM, and also an introduction to use of the TSM protocol for those new to this tool.
To help the audience engage with the session, a short primer on TSM and the Safe, Healthy, and Respectful Workplaces Protocol will be made available to the audience at the start of the session via a QR code and a limited number of hardcopies.
This session is being organized in collaboration with the Mining Safety Round Table and the Mining Association of Canada.
