Abstract
The Rigid Block Modelling (RBM) approach offers a valuable tool for designing underground mine support systems critical for worker safety and production efficiency. Current practices rely on outdated empirical relationships and simplistic models that inadequately represent rock mass fracturing and ground support mechanisms. This limits geomechanical engineers' ability to evaluate support designs effectively.
Advancements in computer processing and numerical modelling allow us to replace these oversimplified methods with more accurate simulations of failure mechanisms and rock-support interactions. In this study, we implement the RBM approach using the 3D distinct-element modelling software PFC3D to assess support system strategies at the Raglan Mine. Our model is calibrated with observed overbreak data, enabling us to compare various support designs and understand their effectiveness comprehensively.
