Abstract
This presentation focuses on understanding and managing rockburst risks in deep mining. It presents a comprehensive study of factors leading to rockbursts, along with methods for assessing and controlling these risks. Using a bow-tie analysis and a hierarchy of control, this presentation provides a structured view of rockburst risk assessment and the application of various risk management methods, ranging from strategic measures such as mine design and excavation sequencing to tactical measures such as ground pre-conditioning and rock support, and administrative controls such as evacuation and re-entry protocols. A multiple-line defense system is advocated for rockburst risk management to address the uncertainties involved in the process. This approach emphasizes proactive solutions to enhance safety and operational resilience, serving as a valuable resource for mining professionals, researchers, and policymakers seeking practical and systematic methods for rockburst risk management in deep mining operations.
