Abstract
The mining industry is going through a transformation that includes increasing its use of artificial intelligence (AI) in its operations. The role of the mining engineer is a critical factor in the success of these technological advancements. This presentation explores the essential contributions of mining engineers in AI projects at Rio Tinto, particularly in areas such as vehicle automation, mine plan optimization, drill and blast, and grade control. While AI systems offer enhanced efficiency and data processing capabilities, they require the nuanced understanding and expertise of mining engineers to ensure their effective implementation and operation.
Mining engineers possess a unique blend of technical knowledge and practical experience, enabling them to bridge the gap between complex AI algorithms and the realities of mining operations. In vehicle automation, for instance, engineers play a pivotal role in designing systems that account for the unpredictable nature of mining environments, ensuring safety and reliability. The increased implementation of automation at Rio Tinto has also led to exponential growth in the amount of data that engineers are expected to analyze. AI offers an exceptional capability to manage mine data and gain insights that help inform decisions. Complex data models using AI need to be informed and substantiated by mining engineers during all stages of model setup, implementation, and refinement.
Similarly, in mine plan optimization, a mining engineer’s expertise helps tailor AI models to align with geological variations and operational constraints, leading to improved resource extraction and cost efficiency. AI algorithms can likewise be used to analyze geological data and past blast pattern performance as it relates to fragmentation and assist in drill and blast design. This use of AI can improve recovery and reduce costs. Mining engineers are crucial in evaluating AI assisted patterns to ensure designs are practical and align with safety standards and operational goals. Moreover, the involvement of mining engineers in grade control enhances the accuracy of predictive models, ensuring that AI solutions yield tangible benefits in mineral recovery and waste reduction. By incorporating human judgment and contextual knowledge, engineers can validate AI outputs, mitigating the risks associated with reliance on automated systems.
This presentation argues that the integration of AI technologies in mining engineering workflows not only enhances operational efficiency but also fosters innovation within the industry. As mining continues to evolve through digital transformation, mining engineers’ utilization of artificial intelligence will be paramount for driving sustainable growth and addressing the complex challenges faced by the mining sector.
