Abstract
Mining operation increasingly transition toward automation and electrification driven by innovation which is at the heart of this major transformation, the desired result is enhancing safety and operational efficiency. ABB is committed together with other industry leaders to design technologies that make mine safer, smarter and low carbon emission.
The eMine™ Robot Automated Connection Device (ACD) represents a groundbreaking advancement in automated high-power charging for electric mining equipment. The Robot ACD integrates ABB eMine™ FastCharge system supporting rapid, hands-free charging that meets the energy demands of electric mining equipment. It signals a critical step forward enhancing the high-power charging capabilities of the Point of Charge.
Developed in partnership with industry leaders including BHP, Boliden, and Komatsu, this device is designed to operate autonomously, enabling reliable charging without the need for human intervention—a major innovation that enables a safer, more efficient, and ultimately sustainable approach to high-power charging, advancing the potential for fully electric and autonomous mining ecosystems.
Such technology support rapid, hands-free charging that meets the energy demands of electric mining haulage trucks. The presentation will focus on the path from the initial design concept over lab testing and we will share the insights and lessons learned from endurance and durability testing under real site conditions faced in an arctic/desert mining environment.
Currently, the Robot ACD is undergoing testing at ABB’s facility in Sweden, with real-world trials scheduled at the Boliden Aitik mine, in Sweden, by late 2024.
