Abstract
The panel will bring together leading experts to discuss the latest advancements and potential applications of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Very Small Modular Reactors (VSMRs) in the mining, metallurgy, and petroleum industries. This panel will feature professionals from various fields, including nuclear engineering, regulatory affairs, fuel technology, economics, and emerging technologies. They will share their knowledge, experiences, and insights on the design, deployment, and regulatory challenges of SMRs and VSMRs, with a particular focus on their use in mining, metallurgical, and petroleum operations by providing both high-quality heat and electricity. The discussion will cover the integration challenges and opportunities of SMR’s with industrial sites, benefits of modular design, the advantages of GEN III+ (light-water) and GEN IV (non-light water) reactors, the potential for remote and off-grid applications, and the economic and policy considerations that support the use of these technologies.
The panel will also discuss the critical aspects of fuel supply and sustainability, highlighting importance of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU). Additionally, the panelists will address the regulatory landscape, providing an overview of the certification and licensing processes necessary for deploying SMRs and VSMRs. By examining case studies and potential applications, the panel aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with these reactors. This session will be moderated by a Timothy A. Frazier, a senior nuclear consultant, ensuring a dynamic and engaging discussion that encourages audience participation and fosters a deeper awareness and knowledge base in the field of modular nuclear reactors.
