Abstract
Safety is often measured in statistics & streaks. It is important to remember that safety is not only defined by a ‘statistic’ or a ‘streak’ but at its core is a choice. Zero harm is often stated as the goal. At Torex no lives lost & no lives changed because of a workplace injury is our way of defining the required precision to internalize zero harm for ourselves, our coworkers, and our families. Creating a strong safety culture that is capable of achieving excellence in Health & Safety performance requires a deeper understanding of the psychology of risk taking, managing risk, and the role of leadership. At Torex we’ve mapped out a plan to creating an organization where no one gets hurt, while meeting or beating our production, cost, and people objectives, and because it’s the right thing to do! Our values are a key part of forming our beliefs, which help create a foundation for the behaviours we demonstrate to others while at home, work, or during travel. How we behave as leaders is a powerful symbol to others, which is often simple, but not easy to accomplish.
