Abstract
In this paper, we will provide an overview of solutions (digital and operational excellence based – short interval control (SIC)) designed and implemented at Hudbay Lalor Mine to improve mucking efficiency. A baseline of mucking performance is presented prior to the implementation of digitalization and SIC in order to determine improvement targets. Digitalization technology is discussed from perspective of an appropriate communication network to meet requirements, along with the approach to digital security. Mobilaris Mining Intelligence (MMI) was utilized to provide required data to allow for implementation of SIC principles (combining both methodology and manpower) to improve mucking performance. Use of SIC allowed for improved shift planning, modifying in-shift performance to meet targets, and generation of data and related opportunities for further improvement. Performance has improved via reduction in variance between crews, allowing for an increase of plus 300 tonnes/day ore over baseline.
Biography of the presenter
Ken Schroeder P.Eng. – Digital Product Manager Epiroc, Ken is a highly regarded 20 year champion on the design, implementation and execution of Operational Excellence systems; the last 12 years in mining specifically. He was an employee of Vale Base Metals from 2008-2012 in the corporate Operational Excellence Department, subsequently leveraging this experience and background into a successful consulting business over a five year period; resource clients including Cliff’s Natural Resources, Cenovus Energy, Barrick,BHP, and TransAlta Power. He is currently Digital Product Manager with Epiroc, representing the Mobilaris Mining Intelligence system. A core belief of Mr. Schroeder is that underground digital technology is an enabler to a high functioning operational excellence system – whose key function is to bring stability to mining processes. Mr. Schroeder is a Chemical Engineering graduate from Queen’s University, and also holds a Master’s in Engineering from the University of Western Ontario.
