Abstract
Performance Benchmark Testing between Diesel and Battery Electric Machine
During the last decade, there has been increased interest from the mining industry to adopt battery electric vehicles as a low carbon alternative to diesel-powered equipment. Several mines implemented a few battery electric vehicles (BEV) to gain an understanding of the characteristic of this technology. However, there is a large knowledge gap in understanding the performance difference and requirements between the two technologies.
CanmetMINING and CanmetENERGY collaborated with industry partners to develop a test method to address these gaps, namely: the diesel to electric power consumption equivalent, fuel consumption per tonne, among other performance correlations between the two technologies.
Several sets of machines were tested including a BEV and diesel from each machine class. Testing consisted of evaluating these at two speeds (low and high) on a 2.5 km test route with two weight conditions. The controlled test route included flat, uphill, and downhill areas up to 20% grade. The data analysis results will be useful for the mining industry to estimate electricity requirements for charging and to develop a BEV performance benchmark.
