Abstract
This presentation reviews select case studies to demonstrate the potential to estimate pre-mining stress and a geometry of hanging wall instability from extensometer data. It introduces a new method for estimating a change in stress based on the elastic properties of the rock mass and strains calculated from extensometer measurments. The presentation also reviews the recently developed Strain Effective Radius Factor (SERF) method as a tool for estimating a geometry of hanging wall instability and proposes a variation to improve the reliability of the tool.
