Beyond the Hot Wash: Psychological Health Before-During- & After a Potentially Traumatic Event
In high-stakes mining environments, safety protocols for physical incidents are rigorous and precise. We know how to shore up a tunnel, but do our protocols for the human operating that machinery match that precision? Historically, the industry relied on reactive models—waiting for incidents to occur before deploying support or using a standard "hot wash" focused on operational facts while overlooking the psychological impact of trauma. Today, we prioritize proactive psychological wellness for teams and rescuers with our experts with Sask Mental Health.
Drawing on eight years of field-tested work across Saskatchewan’s potash and uranium sectors, this session introduces a comprehensive "Before, During, and After" framework for psychological safety, moving beyond "wellness" buzzwords to the hard science of performance.
First, we address the "Before": building "pre-exposure psychological agility." We demonstrate how to teach crews to identify cognitive bandwidth and recognize early neurological signs of stress—gaining regulation skills to avoid the blind spots that often precede safety risks.
Next, we tackle the "During": providing strategies for real-time emotional processing. We explore how to maintain executive function and prevent protocol failure when the brain is under siege.
Finally, we redefine the "After": restructuring post-incident phases from operational debriefing to genuine psychological recovery. This ensures long-term retention and prevents the cumulative burnout that erodes experienced teams.
Attendees will leave ready to challenge traditional narratives. And make moves that support high performers’ resilience and adaptation as a tangible, trainable skill. By integrating neuro-safe practices, safety leaders can build a culture where mental durability is as engineered and reliable as the ground support they trust with their lives.
