Description
The purpose of this presentation is to examine the prevalence, severity and ramifications of serious musculoskeletal injuries in the mining industry.
The learning objectives of the session are to:
- identify workers in the mining industry who are at the most risk for serious musculoskeletal challenges
- discuss specific types of common serious injuries and their mechanisms
- explore the most recent clinical practice guidelines to recognize evidence-based approaches to effectively manage or better yet prevent serious occupational injury
The presentation is an opportunity to identify engaging strategies for providing access to educational materials, and occupational training. We will then describe how to implement those strategies, and discuss access to care pathways that will foster a worker’s safe return to their occupation and leisure.
The session leader Dr. Steven Passmore, DC, PhD, is an associate professor at the University of Manitoba, in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management, where he has taught courses in Human Factors & Ergonomics, Physical Activity & Aging, and Human Anatomy. Also, as a licensed chiropractor in the Wellness Institute at Seven Oaks General Hospital, he is familiar with treatments and rehabilitation for musculoskeletal injuries. As a published researcher he has co-authored multiple clinical practice guidelines, and a systematic review on returning to work following back pain.
