Abstract
Beginning in 2004, our air quality monitoring system, HyLoENVIRO™ has been monitoring SO2 emissions from two of the largest mining companies in the City of Greater Sudbury. In its early stages it was the largest SO2 monitoring network operating in Canada with 18 active monitoring sites, two meteorological stations and one SO2 mobile unit. FROSKR’s role as a third-party monitor and reporter of company data has maintained for over 17 years – providing a compelling business case for technology evolution, community engagement, lessons learned and long-term industry and government partnerships. The HyLoENVIRO™ system is unique in that is not only provides both mining operations with remote real-time data, it also ensures legislative compliance and builds community trust through a display of the transparent data for the community through a public facing website. For over a decade, both major mining companies have confidently optimized production by predicting emission levels, and minimized harm to the environment, while maximizing trust with surrounding communities and regulators. Presenters will discuss the inception and evolution of this climate-smart mining technology, and its important role in responsible mining and combating climate change.
