Abstract
Mining projects face unique challenges: massive capital investments, schedule volatility, permitting risks, remote locations, and extreme climates. Traditional contract delivery methods often struggle to balance cost, schedule, and constructability under these conditions. The Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) approach provides a proven alternative that better addresses these challenges.
CMAR brings the contractor into a mining project early in the design phase to provide cost estimating, scheduling, and constructability expertise, while committing to deliver the work under a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP). This collaborative model allows owners to manage risk more effectively, enabling early procurement of long-lead equipment, concurrent infrastructure construction, and integrated safety planning. The result is a more flexible, transparent, and investor-credible process tailored to the high-stakes demands of modern mining projects.
CMAR also fosters a collaborative team environment that aligns owners, contractors, and stakeholders, creating credibility with investors and regulators. This combination of risk management, cost certainty, schedule advantage, and enhanced collaboration makes CMAR a highly effective delivery model for today’s mining projects.
