Abstract
This paper will discuss Epiroc’s partnership with Collège Boréal on an innovative new battery electric vehicle (BEV) maintenance program. The program, offered by Sudbury-based Collège Boréal, is the first of its kind in Canada and reinforces the staying power of battery equipment in the mining and construction industry. On the topic of advanced education and learning opportunities, the presentation will also cover virtual training and the benefits these sessions can offer mining personnel, especially those working in remote areas. Live print training is another key component of these learning modules that allows students to make mechanical changes in real time and observe the effects while in a training tool, instead of on an actual machine.
The importance of battery electric vehicles and the corresponding technology is continuing to gain momentum as operations increase their focus on the digitalization and electrification of mines. With this trend in mind, Collège Boréal created a three-part program, beginning with a 40-hour online course. The online session is followed by hands-on training in classroom and workshop settings. By completing the program, students will gain valuable experience in this innovative sector, which is expected to grow exponentially in the near future.
Epiroc’s goal in this partnership with Collège Boréal is to further the education of all personnel involved in the growing field of electrification in mining, with an added focus on safety and training requirements for batteries, electric drivetrains, battery equipment and energy storage. Epiroc will be actively participating and supporting the Collège Boréal initiative for the Battery Electric Maintenance Program and will continue to partner with them on further training initiatives. This includes training tools and materials that will make the future training courses the best in class for years to come. Epiroc and Collège Boréal are also building a test bench based on the electric powertrain of a Scooptram ST 1030. This test bench, based on real life components and technology, will give students the opportunity to learn about electric powertrain systems, components and system controls.
The Sudbury region has deep roots in mining and innovation, so the opportunity for Epiroc to enter this partnership with Collège Boréal and see the benefits to both the mining industry and safe working practices in the local community is an exciting proposition.
