Abstract
An overview of some of the more important seismic design considerations for the seismic retrofit of legacy tailings deposits built in the upstream direction will be presented. The components of a tailings deposit system, the seismic and geotechnical hazards of greatest concern in the retrofitting of these components and the predicted seismic performance of a retrofitted tailings deposit will be described. Seismic design philosophy and retrofitting approaches will be outlined. A discussion on the variability of seismic design ground motions and shear strength parameters will be highlighted by a real case example.
