Abstract
Earlier this year, the electric car sales hit the tipping point. 5% of the global car sales were electric. And we are told that this will help to save the environment. Well, I’ve got a question for you… how clean do you think your Tesla is?
You see, an electric vehicle requires up to six times the metals & minerals used than by a standard car. Nickel, lithium, copper. And these raw materials need to be mined.
And renewable energy technologies are no different. Wind turbines, solar panels. With our efforts to expand the use of these clean energy tech, the demand for natural resources is exploding.
In a nutshell, mining industry is an integral part of our transition for a clean future.
But here’s the thing… considering that mining is responsible for a quarter of global greenhouse-gas emissions…I can’t help but wonder: If the mining industry is not clean/, can we call renewable energy clean?
Imagine… sustainability mindset throughout the full value chain: from miners and manufacturers to all the way to consumers.
Now, this may sound like a pipe-dream. After all, it’s a big change. Especially, for an industry considered dirty such as mining. But we have the power to make this happen!
The solution that I propose is a 3-step framework that will challenge the industry’s standards within, as well as improve the public’s perception of mining.
My name is Alp Bora and I’m a mining expert.
I built this talk based on my experience and observations working in mining for over a decade on three continents.
With the economy’s unquenchable thirst for more metals and minerals, we are on a burning platform.
This is the moment for everyone, from the leaders of the mining industry to organizations and communities to become ambassadors of mining for a clean future.
