Abstract
The mining industry is in need of talent now more than ever before as the sector is under the spotlight of controversial topics such as critical minerals, renewable energy transition, and local community relations. As the baby boomers start entering retirement, how can we provide the next generation with the necessary tools and skills to solve an ever-expanding list of problems within the industry?
The presentation will examine the current way of in-house talent and leadership development in a wide range of branches within mining. Then a comparison will be made between the mining sector against a young people-driven industry like technology. Differences in skills, tools, and culture will be identified to see where the mining industry is behind on in terms of recruitment and development for the next generation of leaders.
While identifying the problems is one part of the solution, we will also need to bring up the discussion on what can the current leaders within the industry do to help support and mentor the next generation to ensure that necessary knowledge, experience, and wisdom gets passed down as well.
