Abstract
The annual Canadian environment, health and safety (EHS) survey is conducted collaboratively by the Association for Mineral Exploration (AME), Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), and the Canadian Diamond Drilling Association (CDDA). The objective of the survey is to evaluate the performance and practices of mineral exploration companies and government geological surveys involved in explorations across Canada; this survey addresses critical aspects of organizational safety.
The survey, facilitated through explorationsurvey.ca, collects data from participants nationwide, focusing on safety reporting mechanisms, prevention measures, and incident response protocols. In addition, participants upload spreadsheet of incident details, forming a comprehensive dataset. Results from this survey, presented annually at the EHS breakfast during Roundup, provide a holistic understanding of the environmental, health, and safety landscape within the Canadian mineral exploration sector.
The results from the 2022 survey reveal two fatalities under investigation— a helicopter crash and a drowning incident. Workplace incidents predominantly involve drilling rigs (51%), followed by camp and field work related incidents (28%). The leading anatomical locations for injuries include the hand (16%), fingers (16%), wrist (10%), and lower back (11%).
The discussion interprets these findings in the context of safety protocols, training initiatives, and incident response strategies. The prevalence of incidents related to drilling rigs and camp/field work underscores the necessity for targeted interventions in these operational domains.
The results of the survey serve as a foundation for ongoing efforts to enhance health and safety practices within the Canadian mineral exploration industry. The survey continues to be a helpful tool for identifying areas of improvement and fostering a safer working environment. Ultimately, this study contributes to the overarching goal of minimizing incidents and promoting the well-being of those engaged in mineral exploration across Canada.
