Abstract
To accelerate the journey to Zero Harm we need to focus on three main objectives:
1) Risk Awareness: People must be thinking about safety and prevention as they perform their duties every minute of every day. This is the fundamental basis to achieving Zero Harm. Individuals must have their minds focused on how their decisions create risk whether they are in the field or in an office.
2) Risk Identification: Through education, training, tools, and knowledge sharing (ex. Safe Start Stories), individuals can improve their understanding and identification of risks.
3) Risk Control and Mitigation: Tthe final objective is to determine the best method to effectively control the risks.
It is a journey to achieve Zero Harm. HSSE must be embedded in our culture and the way we do business, Zero Harm is a value and not a priority. This extends not only to our people, but the environments and communities we work in. Working with Zero Harm is our social license to operate.
There are several actions that each of us take individually, and collectively, to improve the safety of our workplaces.
1) Improving Safety Shares - Quality, Engagement, Language (ex. "Quick Safety Share" should never be used when HSSE is a value in our organizations)
2) Prevention Through Design - Checklists, Constructibility Reviews, Tools & Technology (ex. Virtual Reality)
3) Learning from Each Other - Communication, Leveraging Lessons Learned (recent hoisting icident in South Africa killed 11 workers and injured another 75, working together - regulators, industry, academia
