Abstract
The global push for decarbonization is driving significant changes in the metals and mining sector, where smelters, furnaces, and kilns play a crucial role in the energy-intensive process of extracting and refining metals. Decarbonizing smelters and furnaces across various metals processes presents significant challenges due to their heavy reliance on fossil fuels and the associated high-intensity heat required for processes like metal smelting, cement production, and glass manufacturing. The transition to low carbon solutions is particularly complex, particularly as many industries have established infrastructures and processes optimized for traditional fuels while requiring consistent and reliable heat supply. In order to accelerate deployment of any solution at the lowest possible cost and risk, it is generally recognized that industry collaboration is a fundamental requirement and industry leaders have much to learn from one another.
This presentation explores a variety of decarbonization options, ranging from novel processes and technologies to fuel switching and carbon capture strategies. With a focus on the mine and metals sector’s pathway to achieving net-zero emissions, we will assess the potential of different options for those with furnaces and smelting operations: Electrification, alternative fuels—such as hydrogen and biochar, and carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) to dramatically reduce the emissions footprint of the associated industries.
A key element of this exploration will be the identification of the most suitable decarbonization pathways for different types of high-temperature processing units, including blast furnaces, rotary kilns, and electric arc furnaces. By examining the energy demands, operating conditions, and material requirements of each, the presentation will propose tailored solutions for various metallurgical processes and broader analogous industrial processes. The goal is to provide insight into how these approaches can be integrated into existing operations while maintaining economic viability and product quality.
The presentation will include an in-depth case study of a recent project focused on a submerged electric arc furnace (SEAF) located in Canada. This project, which assessed a range of decarbonization strategies, offers valuable lessons and practical recommendations for integrating alternative energy sources and reducing carbon emissions in SEAF operations. Attendees will gain insights into the technological and operational challenges faced, as well as the potential to scale these innovations across the broader industry.
This discussion will provide industry professionals and decision-makers with a comprehensive understanding of the technical and strategic options available to achieve meaningful emission reductions across different smelter, furnace, and kiln types, positioning the metals and mining sector for a sustainable, low-carbon future.
