Abstract
GHG reduction, changing regulation and a focus on healthy work environments are creating the need for near zero gas emissions from mine air heating (MAH) systems. The direct fired style of heating system is used in cold climates of North America to condition the air before it is sent underground; but also produces CO, NOx (NO + NO2) emissions, exposing workers to respiratory irritants. The lower cost, higher efficiency, smaller foot print and ease of maintenance of the direct fired systems are preferred over the alternative of indirect fired systems.
This discussion will look at the key strategies and results for utilization of proven Best Available Control Technology (B.A.E.T.) with Combustion Systems Integration to achieve near zero gas emissions as applied at a Vale mine site. The discussion will look at flexibility and efficiency of application to existing Natural Gas, Propane and Produced Gas Direct Fired Systems; and solutions that can be readily applied to next generation heater houses.
