Abstract
Mining companies around the world, including members of the International Council on Mining and Metals , are declaring their commitment to net zero greenhouse gas emissions. While these commitments are lauded and lofty, many mining companies are determining how to effectively plot a path to zero, shifting from a paradigm of “stay the course” to today’s need for an innovation mindset and rapid technology deployment. This presentation will provide a framework and approach for getting a mining company to net zero considering the unique context of each company and operation. The new and emerging GHG-reducing technologies being considered by the sector will be discussed, including their status, technology development risks, challenges associated with deployment, and how to better accelerate development and deployment of these technologies. The role of additive manufacturing and virtual digital solutions as important enablers in acceleration will explored. The presentation also pays attention to the organizational challenges and opportunities of those companies needing to broadly engage its employee base as part of the journey, both through enabling its leaders as well as having the detractors become your champions. Select case study examples will be shared including how these technologies fit into a net zero strategy framework. Opportunities associated with companies in the supply chain incorporating the same technologies will be considered. Learn how some mining companies are taking advantage of the energy transition to create new business opportunities associated with strategic technologies while also reducing their emission profile. .
