Abstract
Different approaches can be used to optimize the control performance in mineral processing. Model predictive control (MPC), fuzzy logic control (FLC) artificial intelligence (AI) and expert systems are words that easily come to mind when discussing this topic. However, deploying advanced process control (APC) or AI without preparing the ground properly may lead to mixed results and prevent obtaining maximum ROI from investment in advanced control software and services.
A process is analogous to an orchestra where APC is the conductor, PID and other regulatory controllers are the musicians and field devices like sensors and valves are the instruments. Think about your experience as a spectator to a concert where a world renown conductor is leading a group of unskilled musicians playing out-of-tune instruments, it surely won’t be the best money spent on a ticket!
By following a proper path to implement advanced control, we can make sure that the APC architecture will use the existing assets to their full potential and ensure regulatory controllers and field devices are ready to deal with the more demanding workload coming with APC.
This paper will demonstrate how a systematical, step by step approach, while help you avoid common pitfalls and guarantee the successful implementation of an APC project. This approach will also provide benefits from the first steps, by ensuring maximum performance of your existing assets. A case study will be used to explain the method, demonstrate and discuss the results.
